It's amazing how far we've come in such a short span of time. I had friends in the military who were afraid to come out, because of DADT. But thanks to God and our President, this is no longer an issue.
I absolutely had to post this video on my blog today. These two marines are so darn adorable. You may have heard of Jonathan Russell - he's a YouTube vlogger known as "Your Favorite Gay Marine". Well, in his most recent video he answers viewers questions about how he and his boyfriend, Matt met. It's quite cute, and definitely very cool to see.
God Bless our men in uniform!
If this video doesn't move you to tears you're not human. Seriously. It doesn't matter if you're gay or straight, this video shows the true measure of a man. Compassion, heart, and love for the human soul. I posted this video on Facebook two years ago, and for the life of me couldn't remember who sang it. But due to Facebook's new Timeline features, I was able to find it. And since my blog readers haven't seen it I'm posting it as a treasured memory forever.
Before Don't Ask Don't Tell was abolished a surviving partner may or may not have been notified of the death of their loved one, may or may not have been allowed to claim the body, attend the military burial and definitely would NOT receive the survivor's benefits. Furthermore, the surviving partner could lose their home, their property, depending on their state. The soldier's family could even petition in court for half of all property and holdings. And this is still going on, because DADT only allows you not to lie or keep it a secret that you're gay.
The song titled, "Lover" tells a story very rarely told: of the loss endured by partners of gay servicemembers who are killed in battle.
The video features the artist, Tom Goss as the bereaved partner of an army soldier (Washinton DC actor Ben Horen) killed while on duty in Afghanistan. Among those playing medics who come to the aid of the wounded soldier are several former servicemembers who were discharged under the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy: Mike Almy, David Hall, and Danny Hernandez, all of whom are active members of SLDN. Keith Bryant stars as a fellow soldier.
As many of you know by now, a policy that discriminated against "my family" was repealed yesterday, never to be heard from again. When I say "my family" I mean to say my gay brothers. This policy reprimanded gays who were in the U.S. Military. Men who have sacrificed their lives for our country... Men who have fought to defend our freedom in countless wars. They are no different than our friends and family who have given their lives to the U.S. Military.
The Don't Ask Don't Tell Policy ended years of pain and heartache for many people in this country and around the world. And one particular soldier stationed in Germany who had something to tell his father...
"Dad, I'm gay," the soldier uttered into his cellphone. "Always have been and always known forever," he adds.
How did his father react? He tells the young soldier, "I still love you son."
And that was all I needed to start crying. The soldier was relieved to hear his father assure him that this would not change their relationship.
I have friends whose parents have shunned them for being gay, disowned them for caring, or loving someone they can't live without. I cannot begin to imagine how this would feel - it would utterly devastate me! Furthermore, I don't know how a mother or father could hate their child so much, that they would kick them out of a family they've always loved and known. I just don't understand it. Is this what a Christian is like? Is this what Jesus would do?
