This video is truly unique, undeniably jaw dropping and ultimately Gaga. When I first saw it I had the same reaction that I had when I first witnessed her video for Bad Romance which was simply....WHAT THE F*&K! By now I've watched it several times and like all of Gaga's songs and videos it's grown on me and I know I love it, but at the same time, like in most of Gaga's videos again, you cannot just quickly view the first layer and immediately skip to judgment. You can't treat Gaga's videos like any other artist because, like the siren herself, they're complicated and filled with different messages that have to be pulled back layer by layer and analyzed. Her unique ability to create sounds and images that no one else can or is willing to do is what got her where she is today and separates her from the same shit we see on different days. Hence, immediately dismissing the video as a trashy mess, as one blogger put it, cannot be done without first trying to understand why she has created what we have just experienced.
So what is that, per say? What the hell just happened here on my computer screen? Gaga doesn't ever give a truly detailed explanation about her videos. Sure she'll hint at certain things here and there or make one general comment about the point of the piece, but if you're still wondering what's with the dancing white nurse monsters in Bad Romance or why Alejandro was filled with a bunch of naked, ripped monks wearing black high heels; you'd better ponder something quick cause we're moving on. Ultimately, what the imagery means to you will not be exactly the same as what it means to the next little monster, so after reading my opinion please take from it what you will and create your own. Anyone who is willing to analyze it cannot be wrong, so knowing that, let's now give it a try.
When the video begins the first image you see is a pink triangle, a known gay symbol that represented the persecution that homosexuals went through in Nazi concentration camps. We see this as the first and last image that hits the screen opening and ending the video, but in the end the triangle is now turned upside down representing change for our future, for the better, for the now lack of persecution, judgment and hatred on Earth. Don't get the unicorn yet; a sign of fantasy becoming reality perhaps? The main theme so far, as the video continues, is the creation of this new and perfect race where no hatred exists. She literally births these new beings into existence, kind of like how she created all us little monsters in a community free of judging and persecuting each other for being different. At the same time good was created, something evil was created too, like fame, pride, diva fan rivalry and gaga haters as well as the fighting rage that comes with defending mother monster that we've all experienced before. But, in the end, without this rage and willingness to fight back, how could the outcast, bullied and teased truly survive? In other words, Gaga's words, how can good possibly exists without evil?
Throughout the video we're met with additional images of Gaga: The Hindu Goddess of Fertility Gaga which brings about the creation of this race of loving beings. The machine gun wielding, dark side of Gaga that would do anything and everything to protect her children also creates an ever darker form of Gaga, a thing born of sin that enjoys all its pleasures from sex to massively detailed tattoos. Notice the "Lady" tattooed on the four fingers of her right hand and the "Gaga" printed on the four on the other side. There is also the child born of no hate Gaga with all her back up dancing brothers and sisters. Notice that they rejoice and also seem to "love" each other, which hopes me to believe that they're not actually all related after all, but also leads me to think that sex is shown to be not only a thing of sin but also a thing of beauty since both Gaga creations actively participate in it. The final version of the lady is what I like to call tribute Gaga. This short and final display not only shows her love for her former ground breaking role models of music's past, but also cries in despair for not knowing why paying tribute to icons only brings ridicule and shame to her. Oh yeah, almost forgot bobble head Gaga that I guess shows that she is, once again, a creation from the other mother space god Gaga.
Either way, after viewing every visually high inducing scene, you can come up with two possible conclusions to sum up the whole thing. Take the creationism story for what it is and hope that with enough loving people that Gaga has helped make and bring together that one day the world of compassion, free of hatred and persecution, will no longer be just a fairytale and will soon be a reality that we can all enjoy. Another route would be to listen to the song and the words it provides. All the different people, all the different Gagas and everyone listening now are beautiful in their way cause God makes no mistakes. They're on the right track baby cause they we're all born this way. Not everything in this video was nice to see and pretty much all of it was different, but Gaga says that that's okay. She's still gonna make it, she's still gonna promote it and she's still gonna push the message that it represents because if she was to turn out what everyone else is doing and just fall to peer pressure then she would not only not be ground breaking, she would also be betraying her fans that have come to love her for being a different person that's not ashamed of who she is and that also fully accepts them for being different too. This video is a freak just like me, just like Gaga and just like you and that truly is a beautiful thing.
Whatever you may think about this video, whether it be positive or negative, have no worries fans because Gaga has another video for a more "toned down version" of Born This Way that, rumor has it, will air next week. There was a comment made on another blog that I read that the reason she supposedly didn't stick to the whole video of happy gays and lesbians and trannies saying how proud they are to be born this way was: 1. It would have been predictable and 2. She wanted this video to be more neutral and mean something to everyone and not just a specific group. This theoretically coming from Gaga personally doesn't make sense to me unless the other video is simply what some of us had hoped that this music video would show more of: happy gays and lesbians and trannies saying how proud they are to be born this way. Gaga promotes that the second video will be for purchase on I-tunes shortly and that the proceeds made will all go to charity. Perhaps "toned down" really means a ballad version of Born This Way that is specifically targeted to the LGBT community and, hence, not made for everyone. Knowing Gaga's dedication to the gay community as well as her fight for equal rights really does lead me to believe, as well as hope, that this next video will bring all her gays to tears with such a loving emotion that only someone like Gaga could inspire in all of us. I promise now, if I'm completely wrong on this, I will be honestly disappointed in her for the first time. Let us hope that it doesn't come to that, but until then I hope you have enjoyed my vast opinion on the subject. I have no clue what Gaga can keep producing to continue the hype and shock value that almost always surrounds her work, but with the next single titled "Judas" about back stabbing boyfriends out this May, as well as 15 other songs to be featured on her soon to be released album also in May, I have confidence that we'll all be talking about, figuring out and ultimately loving this mistress of mayhem, this artist within an artist, our mother monster Lady Gaga, for definitely sometime to come.
On second thought, maybe the unicorn was a subtle jab, meant to show Ke$ha how to properly use them in music videos. Just saying.
