Keeping It Old Skool - Issue No. 5 - The Rubik's Cube
I had originally intended this post to be a special issue of my 'Poster of the Week' series, but then realized I could use it as a 'Keeping It Old Skool' issue instead. And after looking at the motivational phrase, I couldn't pass it up.
This is so-something I would've done back in the 1980's. I hated these damn things growing up; I even removed all the stickers once and "completed it." My sister and parents thought I was a genius. :-) Little did they know I had trouble making them stick.
According to Wikipedia:
The Rubik's cube is a 3-D mechanical puzzle invented in 1974 by Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture Ernő Rubik. Originally called the "Magic Cube", the puzzle was licensed by Rubik to be sold by Ideal Toy Corp. in 1980.
As of January 2009, 350 million cubes have sold worldwide making it the world's top-selling puzzle game. It is widely considered to be the world's best-selling toy.
Ironically enough the concept wasn't entirely Rubik's; prior attempts had been made using a spherical version of one, but it never took off.
I remember sitting in class or just out with friends in the playground, and everyone was playing with one of these magical little boxes. Sometimes my sister and I would fight at the Pizza Hut gumball machine to see who could get the special key-chain version of the toy - of course our mother ended up with it.
As with all my 'Keeping It Old Skool' issues, you need a classic trailer...
Another classic trailer after the jump...

Mind-Boggling News: I Killed My Cat For GAGA!
It's not only the Beiber-crazies that are looney when it comes to worshiping their idols, apparently Gaga has some too. Courtesy of Max Read from Gawker:
First, I really hate the fact that people use the phrase 'a male nurse' instead of simply just saying 'a nurse.' Like one commenter said, "Seriously. I wonder if she saw a 'female doctor' during her stay."
It's a profession people, get it together - a nurse is a nurse, a doctor is a doctor - it doesn't matter if your male or female.
As for the story, I'm so happy Ryan didn't mutilate our chihuahuas as obsessed as he is about The Lady; Sometimes I wonder what he'll do next.

A 20-year-old Oklahoma woman killed and mutilated her family's cat, apparently so she could use its blood for an outfit to wear to a Lady Gaga concert. Talk about a "little monster"! But seriously, she killed a cat.
According to police, Angelina Barnes drowned the cat, sliced open its belly, mutilated its eyes and removed its liver, which cops later found "in a makeup case on the counter." An unidentified relative arrived home to find Barnes—who had "cover[ed] light switches with duct tape so she wouldn't be able to turn on the light"—dressed in a "long coat" with "streaks of what turned out to be cat blood on her face." This was, it seems, the outfit she planned on wearing to the Lady Gaga concert.
As you might expect, Barnes did not go to the Lady Gaga concert. She went instead to the hospital, "where she threatened a male nurse with a piece of glass"; she's now "receiving treatment" at a local hospital. Tonight, Lady Gaga plays Miami.

24: The Movie
If you don't know who Brian Grazer is, then you need a lesson on television shows and who produces them. Just Kidding. I only learned of Brian Grazer because of Fox's hit show 24 and Friday Night Lights. So you can just imagine what I thought, when I realized he was an award-winning producer, more-so than my favorite producer David E. Kelley.
Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that Grazer is on board to produce a movie based on his hit show '24.'
The news only gets better for fans who are anxiously awaiting the return of Jack Bauer:
Uber-producer Brian Grazer recently tweeted that he’s on board for long-gestating 24 movie.
“Got off the phone Keifer yesterday and we are very excited about producing the 24 movie for next year,” he tweeted.
Grazer’s involvement makes sense since Imagine Entertainment, the company he co-owns with Ron Howard, produced the long running action drama for Fox.
Last month, Kiefer Sutherland told the women of The View that the movie will come out in 2012.For those unfamiliar with the television series, which garnered many awards and ran for 8 seasons on Fox, is about a Federal Agent, Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) who
"can't afford to always play by the rules. As a member of the L.A. Counter Terrorist Unit, Jack must stop bombs, viruses, assassination attempts, and usually save someone he cares about at the same time. Every season of this series has 24 episodes, each unfolding in real time following a consecutive hour in one very bad day."Ryan and I watched all 8 seasons of this suspenseful action/thriller/drama, and I'm saying this only once - The show was PHENOMENAL! Personally, I'm really excited about this, it's been a long time coming. I can't wait to see what characters they bring back onto the project. Anyone, but Kim Bauer. Ugh, we couldn't stand her! LOL

The Internet. Have You Heard Of It?
And you thought when you were born, the Internet was already here...
Imagine living in a world where we didn't have Google to help us find the answers to a test. Where we didn't have a "smart" phone when we went camping hundreds of miles away from our home. Where all we did was play outside with our friends, shoot hoops, and afterwards head to the library to complete a science fair project.
Check out this hilarious video from the 90s where the Today show anchors are introduced to the Internet. Most importantly, "Can you explain what internet is?"

States At Peace
According to the Global Peace Index, the south is the least peaceful place to be.
I'm going to disagree with that - true, we have more conservative, bible thumping, liberal hating people in our state than all the other states combined, but we're a huge state. And you can't discount the fact, that we have a gay mayor controlling the fourth largest city (Houston) in the country. And don't forget Austin, which is considered one of the gay friendliest cities in the U.S.. Also, San Antonio and Dallas don't fall too far behind.
Although we live in the south, I would say that Ryan and I are at peace with ourselves. We live in a peaceful community, and aside from the Obama-Biden poster thieves, I wouldn't have it any other way.

Little Girl Bows in Public
This young Padawan took it upon herself to bow in allegiance to Darth Vader while on vacation with her family; It was cute and hilarious at the same time.
I guess she realized the power of the Dark Side, but Darth wasn't having any of it. He quickly had her escorted off to train with the Sith.

Houston Shut Out
The news of the day was directed at our hometown of Houston all day yesterday. Why, you ask? Because our city, as diverse as it is, got snubbed, spit, kicked in the groin, told to eat shit, and die. It may not have come out that way, but it sure felt like it.
Here is the fourth largest city in the country, who plays host to millions of visitors every year, many of who specifically come to visit the Johnson Space Center. A city which has been at the forefront of space development and exploration for over 50 years,
Here is the fourth largest city in the country, who plays host to millions of visitors every year, many of who specifically come to visit the Johnson Space Center. A city which has been at the forefront of space development and exploration for over 50 years,
'In fact, the most famous and the most infamous words ever spoken in the vacuum of space by humans - "Houston, Tranquility base here. The Eagle has landed," and "Houston, we have a problem" - were directed at the JSC here in Houston.' - The Houston ChronicleBut the most important topic of the conversation, was the blame game that came immediately afterward. And like with everything else, why not blame Obama. Republicans and conservatives cried foul yesterday blaming Obama for the decision, when in fact it was Charles Bolden's decision. While I feel that no one should have disregarded the rich history and contribution our city has made, our local planning committee was really late in fighting for one of the shuttles. All the cities had three years to make their bid, Houston didn't join until last year, and even so, I feel we shouldn't have been snubbed. But to blame Obama for this is ludicrous at best. Let us not forget 20 other cities were snubbed as well.

The Boxing Cat
Wow, this truly takes me back to yesteryear. Before I became a chihuahua owner I was a cat owner, and while most people complain about cats, I genuinely loved mine. I had one cat that actually lived 9 lives, Wendy.
Other than being run over twice, she was hit by a moving car, kicked by children, bitten by a pack of dogs, burned in a BBQ pit, shot at by thugs, succumbed to disease and still managed to live another year or so. God Bless her!
This video is for my Wendy, Boots and Tiger.

Movies to Watch: Rise of the Planet of the Apes
It's only a 5 second clip (video below), but it's one that will creep you out nonetheless. Rise of the Planet of the Apes has released some WETA footage of the ape Caesar from the upcoming film. I'd have to say this is the best computer generated image I have ever seen.
Set in present day San Francisco, the film deals with the aftermath of genetic engineering experiments that lead to intelligence in apes and a war for supremacy.
What a blockbuster summer - I'm telling you!
The movie, which stars hottie, James Franco and Harry Potter's Tom Felton will be released across the US on August 5th.

The Civil War Turns 150 Today.
I have always loved American and World history; The Civil War especially.
150 years ago today, the American Civil War commenced when shots were fired at Fort Sumter. And while the war took place so long ago, the issues involving that time still linger today, and I presume it will for many hundreds of years hereafter. The Daily Beast has a great collection of Civil War photography, including portraits of Lincoln, Grant, and Lee.
You see, we are not a nation who's been around for hundreds, if not thousands of years like China, Russia, or England; Hell, our nation only turned 234 years old last July.
In a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Poll released today, roughly one in four Americans said they sympathize more with the Confederacy than the Union, a figure that rises to nearly four in ten among white Southerners.

When asked the reason behind the Civil War, whether it was fought over slavery or states' rights, 52 percent of all Americas said the leaders of the Confederacy seceded to keep slavery legal in their state, but a sizeable 42 percent minority said slavery was not the main reason why those states seceded.
"The results of that question show that there are still racial, political and geographic divisions over the Civil War that still exists a century and a half later," CNN Polling Director Holland Keating said.
When broken down by political party, most Democrats said southern states seceded over slavery, independents were split and most Republicans said slavery was not the main reason that Confederate states left the Union. We will have a divided nation long after we're gone, this is what will make our country one of the richest histories in the world. Let us remember that in this nation of ours, we can agree to disagree.
Republicans were also most likely to say they admired the leaders of the southern states during the Civil War, with eight in 10 Republicans expressing admiration for the leaders in the South, virtually identical to the 79 percent of Republicans who admired the northern leaders during the Civil War.
