The Hard Task of Being a Loving Parent: Father Scolds Daugther and Destroys Her Laptop for Facebook Status

Videos are going crazy-viral these days, and since this is going around I had to blog about it.
I honestly didn't know what to post this under, because I have two series that are currently running on my blog, "The Joys of being a Parent," and "The Woes of being a Bad Parent."  

Obviously the parent isn't being bad, he's just trying teach his daughter a lesson after she wrote a harsh status update on Facebook about him, her mother, step-mother, and the "cleaning lady" he refers to as Linda.

So because there's no joy in having to punish or ground our kids, and the father was not being a bad parent, I will post this under, "The Hard Task of Being a Loving Parent."  It is a hard task.  What would you have done differently?  I respect my parents so much more today than I ever did for the scolding, grounding, spanking I received growing up, and there was no Facebook.  So just imagine. LOL.

Warning: Since this video seems to have gone crazy, I figure I'll post this notice. I'm going to read a letter my 15 year old daughter wrote. There ARE some curse words in it. None of them are incredibly bad, but they are definitely things a little kid shouldn't hear... not to mention things MY KID shouldn't say! We've all been there; walking around the mall, the grocery store, or in the office.  With a Bluetooth.  LoL.

I can't mention the number of times I've been talking on my Bluetooth and people near me or in the grocery aisle respond to my conversation I'm having with Ryan or my Mom.  It's an awkward feeling, but funny nonetheless.

Check out the Bluetooth man, as he pranks people in several business establishments - it's pretty darn funny.

Movies to Watch - The Amazing Spider-Man

It was released last week, but in the event you haven't seen it, you can see it here.  The official trailer to The Amazing Spider-man which hits theaters on July 3, 2012.

It's a re-boot, yes, but it also takes us on a different path...  Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy, and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance - leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr Curt Connors, his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

Will we be watching?  Ryan and I say, yes.  Even though I'm not a fan of all these superhero re-boots, I am looking forward to seeing this and The Man of Steel.  I'm sure Andrew Garfield and Henry Cavill has something to do with it. :-)

WTF Has Obama Done? - Issue No. 012 - Conservation

I'll be straightforward with you.  If Republicans had their way, our entire country would be a vast, empty and dry desert.  We'd probably go through famine, and our beautiful precious landscape gone within a matter of years.  Thank you God for our democracy!  We live in the land of the free, but it doesn't mean we can take advantage of it and let it die.  

All the Repubs want to do is "drill baby drill" when the oil we drill doesn't even stay in this country.  Did you know that the oil we drill and natural gas we produce in this country are sent to other nations?  Probably not, because most Americans are gullible or watch Fox News - one or the two.  But I'm not here to talk about Oil, I'm here to talk about conservation.

President Barack Obama has not only  managed to achieve 6 broad policies, 3 sources of funding and 8 targeted areas for a total of 17 achievements in regard to Conservation in 3 short years, he has managed to protect our water, landscape, refuges, and our national parks greater than any president has to date.  Today I shall cover 1 from each area.

Morris K. Udall Scholarship and Excellence in National Environmental Policy Amendments Act of 2009.

The Morris K. Udall and Stewart L. Udall Foundation is an Executive Branch office of the United States Government. The Foundation was established by the Congress in 1992 to honor Morris Udall’s thirty years of service in the House of Representatives. Congress amended the name in 2009 to include Stewart Udall, in recognition of his public service. The full official name of the Foundation is Morris K. Udall and Stewart L. Udall Scholarship and Excellence in National Environmental Policy Foundation. The President of the United States appoints its board of trustees with the advice and consent of the Senate.

• Annual scholarships and fellowships to outstanding students who intend to pursue careers related to the natural environment. A student who receives such a scholarship may be known as Udall Scholar.
• Annual scholarships and internships to outstanding Native American and Alaska Native college students who intend to pursue careers in health care and tribal public policy.
• Parks in Focus, which takes young people into national and state parks to expose them to the grandeur of the nation's natural resources and instill a sustainable appreciation for the environment.
• Host an annual conference or discussion of contemporary environmental or Native American issues.
• A program for environmental policy research and a program for environmental conflict resolution at the Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy at the University of Arizona. [Reference-1, Reference-2]

Increased funding for national parks and forests.

President Barack Obama promised to boost funding for national parks and forests, and a bill he signed on Oct. 30, 2009, has done just that. "Will repair the damage done to our national parks by inadequate funding and emphasize the protection and restoration of our National Forests."

In the latest appropriations bill for the Interior Department, which oversees national parks and forests, Congress approved about $2.7 billion to preserve and improve the tracts of land. That's a $218 million increase over the last National Park Service budget, or about 10 percent, according to the House Appropriations Committee.
 
About $2.2 billion will go to operating the national park system, and about $15 million will support a new grant program for park preservation, among other things.

"This bill demonstrates a concerted effort by Congress and the Administration to restore our national treasures in time for the 2016 centennial of the National Park Service," said Tom Kiernan, president of the National Parks Conservation Association.  [Reference-1, Reference-2]

Reengaged in the treaties/agreements to protect the Antarctic.

In 1959, representatives from 12 countries came together in Washington to sign the Antarctic Treaty, which is sometimes referred to as the first arms control agreement of the Cold War. Today, 47 nations have signed it. And as a result, Antarctica is one of the few places on earth where there has never been war. Other than occasional arguments among scientists and those stationed there over weighty matters having to do with sports, entertainment, and science, there has been very little conflict.

It is a land where science is the universal language and the highest priority and where people from different regions, races, and religions live and work together in one of the planet’s most remote, beautiful, and dangerous places.

The genius of the Antarctic Treaty lies in its relevance today. It was written to meet the challenges of an earlier time, but it and its related instruments remain a key tool in our efforts to address an urgent threat of this time, climate change, which has already destabilized communities on every continent, endangered plant and animal species, and jeopardized critical food and water sources. - Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's remarks at the Joint Session of the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting and the Arctic Council, 50th Anniversary of the Antarctic Treaty [Reference-1, Reference-2]

As The World Turns

You just can't debate with crazy, or practically anyone anymore. The world is changing for the better, but some people just can't accept that. All they have left to hold on to are their beliefs.  When those once common ideas are now considered out-dated, irrational and even hateful, and can be proven justly so, people get angry, desperate, and will fight to the very end to protect an ideology that they hold sacred. 

It's an unfortunate sign of the most conservative parts of the Republican party. Never give up, never surrender, never admit you're wrong, just keep screaming nonsense until you drown out your opponent and every last one of his facts.

Well I have a few facts to share myself - Gay people can get married without the sky falling or your family being affected in anyway, shape or form aside from the possibility of them not sharing your homophobic hate. Black people can be in charge of a country that once considered them property.

Being a Liberal is not the same thing as being weak. Trust me. We fight against income inequality in the Occupy Movement. We fight for the right to unionize in Wisconsin, Indiana, Arizona and any other states controlled by a Republican majority that wishes for it to be a "right to work" state. We fight for the health of our women when conservative wolves in pink sheep's clothing attempt to break down Planned Parenthood. And we fight for our right to marry the person we love to not only receive the same benefits that everyone else gets, but to also simply show that we are no different from any straight couple and hence should not be treated differently as such. 

California is another footstep in the marathon that is the fight for marriage equality and gay rights everywhere. We will continue fighting. We are not weak. We are stronger than ever and we will fight for Obama this year and we will win. We must. This country needs to show the world that we stand for common sense, compassion and an ability to inspire hope in others by getting back up after being knocked down hard. Screaming at the top of your lungs until you can't hear the facts just won't do for this country of ours, and neither will defeat, hatred, or the desire to divide.

We can come together to make sure our country continues to succeed and head in its' current, correct direction. We can vote for Obama 2012, because hope is nothing without people to believe in it and change is impossible without people to fight for it.

The Death and Return of Superman

I swear I don't know how I come across some of these videos, but OMG if you're a comic book, superhero fan, Superman fan, whatever, I don't care, just watch this hilarious re-telling of the infamous comic book, The Death and Return of Superman. WTF Has Obama Done? - Issue No. 011 - Arts and Culture

What a great week so far, but we've only touched the tip of the iceberg.  The achievements are far greater than you could've imagined and I'm about to share this with you.

I'm on my 11th issue of this new series and have already posted 28 WTFs (achievements) President Barack Obama has accomplished in merely three years of holding office.  But just to give  you an idea of what you can expect over the next 38 weeks, I have yet to cover Banking and Financial Reform, Commerce Trade and Technology, Conservation, Housing, Humanitarianism, Infrastructure, Labor, Law and Justice, Medicaid/Medicare/Social Security, Space Exploration, Green Energy, Old Energy, Oil Energy, the list goes on.  And in-between those issues I have to go back to each and every one, because there's hundreds of achievements under each category.

Today, we'll focus on Arts & Culture.  Often times we tend to overlook our great history, how we got here and the inventions and the technologies that brought us into the 21st century.  I grew up in the 80s, so having a cell phone for the first time was the most amazing thing ever.  Knowing that we could talk and our voice somehow manage to soar through the air was incomprehensible to me.  We take this kind of stuff for granted, especially those born in the mid to late 1990s, and we shouldn't.  We need to remember how we got here - value life in the best possible way.  Visit museums and libraries - discover our rich history.  Explore the arts and the amazing architecture of our nation.  Discover how each steel was raised, brick was laid or how a log was milled.  There are only 4 achievements for this category, so without further ado...

Increased funding for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to the highest level since 1992.

Over the last 15 years, government funding for the National Endowment for the Arts has been slashed from $175 million annually in 1992 to $125 million today. Barack Obama and Joe Biden support increased funding for the NEA, the support of which enriches schools and neighborhoods all across the nation and helps to promote the economic development of countless communities. [Reference-1]

When President Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, he restored the National Endowment for the Arts' funding to its highest level since 1992. Under the bill, $50 million will be distributed in direct grants to fund arts projects and activities. According to the text of the bill, the allocation will be used to "preserve jobs in the nonprofit arts sector" and compensate for diminished philanthropic support caused by the economic downturn. [Reference-2]

On Friday, October 30^th, President Obama signed the Department of the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act. The bill provides $167.5 million in funding for the National Endowment for the Arts, which is a $12.5 million increase over last year’s funding and their highest funding level in sixteen years. [Reference-3, Reference-4]

Created an artist corps for public schools.

As a candidate, Barack Obama promised to "support the creation of an 'Artists Corps' of young artists trained to work in low-income schools and their communities."

President Obama can cross this promise off his to-do list. On April 21, 2009, he signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, named after the Massachusetts senator. Among other things, the act increases the number of positions within the AmeriCorps program from 75,000 to 250,000 by 2017, establishes a nationwide Call to Service campaign, and expands age and income eligibility for foster grandparents and senior companions.

Buried deep inside the bill, in Section 1302, is a list of programs that are eligible for federal funding. One of these programs is the Education Corps, which the bill calls on to provide--and this is key--"skilled musicians and artists to promote greater community unity through the use of music and arts education and engagement through work in low-income communities, and education, health care, and therapeutic settings, and other work in the public domain with citizens of all ages." That sounds like the Artist Corps to us.  [Reference]

Championed the importance of arts education.

During the campaign, Barack Obama pledged to "promote the importance of arts and arts education in America." Advocates of the promise say an arts education can help students raise their scores in writing and math, and that understanding of the arts is helpful for success in the modern, globally competitive economy.

Since taking office in January 2009, the Obama administration has made several public statements promoting arts education.

In May, at the opening night of the American Ballet Theater in New York, first lady Michelle Obama said, "Learning through the arts reinforces critical academic skills in reading, language arts and math, and provides students with the skills to creatively solve problems. My husband and I believe strongly that arts education is essential for building innovative thinkers who will be our nation's leaders for tomorrow." [Reference]

Promoted cultural diplomacy.

Back in December 2009 we reported on President Barack Obama's efforts to promote cultural diplomacy by increasing the number of cultural and arts exchanges throughout the world.

At the time, we noted that the House passed legislation earlier in the year that included $600 million -- $62 million more than in 2009 -- for the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, which is responsible for overseeing Department of State cultural initiatives. Meanwhile, the Senate Appropriations Committee provided $635.2 million.

Obama increased the budget for international cultural exchange programs in his 2010 budget. The proposed 2011 budget would lower the amount slightly, but it is still above the 2009 level by tens of millions.  [Reference]
